RAHAMA Supports Children’s Education in Northern Sri Lanka.

RAHAMA identifies children at school lacking stationery after reopening of schools in the North. An uninterrupted education for a child is an absolute and inalienable right to be upheld by all, even in times of crisis.

RAHAMA has kicked off distribution of school kits for 841 children at schools. After reopening of schools on December 17, 2025, 120 school children—recommended by school authorities in coordination with regional partners— received school kits to avoid delay in returning to school. The distribution took place in Muththayankaddu, Palinagar, and Pandiyankulam.

Yesterday, at Palinagar Maha Vidyalayam, Manthai-East, 64 students received the kits with the participation of Hon. N. Vedanayagam, Governor of Northern Province. The Governor highlighted that experts and professionals should emerge from their own villages to develop their divisions, and that education is the key that cannot be vanished away by any catastrophe or crisis.

School authorities and partner organizations at the divisional level worked with families and individuals in coordination with our field coordinators as part of RAHAMA’s 6-pillar strategy to serve war-torn villages across Northern Sri Lanka.

Coordination with school authorities

Our Field Coordinators and partners observed that children who experienced catastrophe and lost their belongings required psychosocial support through initial interaction among peers. Accordingly, motivation sessions were delivered inviting students to restart active learning.

RAHAMA works for rural communities in Northern Sri Lanka, where over 277,629 persons were identified as affected soon after the catastrophe. This number decreased to 177,473 as of December 16, 2025, according to the Disaster Management Centre, Sri Lanka.

Affected families who sought safety at 145 safety centers across the province have either returned home or left the centers. Over 56,946 families were affected, including those who sought shelter. Restoring water facilities and sanitation remains another challenge schools face after reopening.
