Strengthening Social Cohesion of youth in Mannar district of Sri Lanka – Recent action was to launch a Blood Donation campaign engaged by the youth.
Strengthening Social Cohesion within communities affected by the protracted war and the escorted consequences such as social disparities within communities in the Mannar district is the most recent Humanitarian action project instigated by RAHAMA with the patronage of Asia foundation and with the partnership of Volunteers for LIFE (V4L). The key determination of this project is to “integrate youth from all communities to understand the concept of social cohesion and to invigorate the relationship within them to build Peace & Reconciliation to be in a stable manner.
Empowering Youth Organizations is considered as an effective tool for information delivery such as the transfer of technical know-how, and public service awareness programmes, e.g. on drug abuse, alcoholism, and dissemination of information on state policies and schemes. The state driven authorities too feel that well established Youth organizations are imperative because such organizations provide young people a forum to fully, effectively deal with an issue that is especially important to them, such as youth violence or education. However, there are a lot of other advantages too.
Youth are full of energy and has enthusiasm to learn, act and achieve. They are the social actors who can perform to bring revolutionary changes and improvement in society. The participation of youth is a must to achieve any kind of future goals of prosperity, progress, peace, and safety.
Blood Donation Campaign organized and concluded with utmost success.
Health authorities in Sri Lanka insists the public to Join Hands with National Blood Transfusion service of Sri Lanka in view of saving thousands of lives, Including Children and in particular the Cancer patients. Currently, the regional hospitals are facing severe shortages of blood due to the present crisis.

RAHAMA in this context together with the institution of Volunteers for LIFE (V4L) in Mannar decided to launch a blood donation event with the inventiveness of youth since youth are full of energy and enthusiasm to learn, act and achieve. They are the social actors who can perform to bring revolutionary changes and improvement in society.
Donation of blood is always been considered as a humanitarian act and a positive behavioral phenomenon. Motivating people to donate blood in hospitals becomes a difficult task at times. Hence the youth who are the main source of our blood donors pool, need to be motivated to come forward for Voluntary blood donation. The youth of Mannar from several organizations interested to give hand to resolve the blood shortage in the Mannar Govt. Hospital,. The event implemented by RAHAMA with the collaboration of Volunteer for LIFE under the Asia foundation project, whereas, 41 youths donated their precious blood to the hospital. One splendid occurrence was that a mother and son also came forward to donate blood. Hospital authorities expressed their appreciation on this event while thanking the contributors.
Recent Action areas focused through the Mannar Youth Development initiatives

It is important to build and promote the concept of religious harmony so as to meet the challenges posed within different ethnic groups in the Mannar district too. Civil communities should enhance mutual understanding and empathy as an humanitarian action while fostering intra- and inter-religious harmony. A free labor work camp was organized with the initiative of LIFE (V4L) institution on May 14th. In focus of the annual event of Buddhists named Vesak festival day. The effort made was to clean and to decorate a Buddhist temple named Shanthipuram Raja Maha Vihara, Mannar. Almost 30 youth from different religious groups participated in this event voluntarily along with the Members of the V4L at the occasion. This was one of the emotional occurrences where the humanity prevails the religious spirituality.
As an strategic move of asserting community cohesion and reconciliation in Mannar District a series of Capacity Building / Leadership Programs were conducted by RAHAMA in collaboration with the institution of LIFE (V4L) under the concept of “Strengthening Social Cohesion” which is supported by Asia Foundation. The long term impact intended is “that youth from all communities gained understanding on the concept of social cohesion while strong relationship is established between them and the war affected communities so as to build Peace & Reconciliation and 85 youth were participated in the programmes.
